100 Years of Dairy Farming: Town of Dryden, Tompkins County, New York AgEcon
Stanton, Bernard F.; Conneman, George J.; Hoskins, Susan B.; Smith, Stuart F..
A history and analysis of farm management surveys for the previous year, conducted on every dairy farm in the Town of Dryden each decade save one, from 1908 through 2008 is presented. Five times as much milk was sold in 2007 from dairy farms based in Dryden as was sold in 1917. Labor productivity in terms of milk sold per worker has increased 35 times in the century reflecting the great gains made from advances in agricultural technology. Dairy farm numbers have decreased from 206 in 1907 to 8 in 2007. Dryden’s dairy farms continue as an important contributor to the economy of the Town.

A Cross Comparison Between California and Its Domestic and International Competitors With Respect to Key Labor Issues AgEcon
Hurley, Sean P..
California had a market value of agricultural products sold of $25.7 billion in the year 2002 ranking it as the top agricultural producing state in the country. Approximately 74% of this market value was attributed to crop sales. California producers spent nearly $20.5 billion on total farm expenses. The largest single expense for agricultural producers in the state was labor at $4.3 billion. Another $1.6 billion was spent on contract labor. Hired and contract labor expenses accounted for nearly 29% of total farm expense. Approximately 34,000 California farms hired over 535,000 laborers. Of these farms, 25% reported hiring migrant labor and 29% hired 10 or more employees. With labor being such an integral part of the California producers’ operations, the...

In 1989, The Cornell Program on Dairy Markets and Policy collaborated with the Texas A&M Agricultural and Food Policy Center to form a National Institute for Livestock and Dairy Policy (NILDP). The Institute is a focal point for a neutral and objective analyses of the consequences of alternative government policies on the livestock, dairy, and poultry industries and the broader economics of livestock and dairy markets. Based on their respective strengths and emphases, Texas A&M is the lead institution on livestock and poultry sector analysis, and Cornell is the lead institution on dairy sector analysis. The Institute has been supported by a special research grant through the U. S. Department of Agriculture since 1989. The Dairy Farm Analysis...

A Spatial Equilibrium Model for IDlperfectly CODlpetitive Milk Markets AgEcon
Kawaguchi, Tsunemasa; Suzuki, Nobuhiro; Kaiser, Harry M..
Traditional spatial equilibrium models have assumed that markets are either perfectly competitive or monopolistic. In this paper, a generalized spatial equilibrium model is developed which allows for any degree of market conduct from perfect competition to monopoly. The model incorporates a "dual structure" in which there are oligopolistic consignment sellers (producer marketing boards) and perfectly competitive producers receiving pooled returns. The usefulness of the model is demonstrated using Kyushu regional milk market data in Japan. Numerous spatial equilibrium solutions are generated for the Kyushu milk market assuming alternative sets of imperfectly competitive behavior with the "dual structure." It is demonstrated that actual interregional milk...
